Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Uganda and Why to Visit
Uganda is a premier destination for mountain gorilla trekking, featuring two primary locations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi Forest National Park is particularly renowned, hosting nearly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
Bwindi covers 131 square kilometers (128 square miles) of ancient montane and lowland forest, housing numerous endangered species, which is why it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s second gorilla park, spans 12 square miles and features a mix of forest, bamboo, and mountainous terrain. This area includes three major peaks of the Virunga Mountains: Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Sabyinyo, with habitats extending into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Visitors can also engage in various activities in Bwindi and Mgahinga, such as bird watching, nature walks, community programs, and gorilla habituation experiences. The availability of gorilla trekking sections depends on the permits when booking your tour. Permits are especially scarce during peak seasons, which run from June to August and December to February. However, visiting during the low season allows for more flexibility in choosing your preferred trekking sector.
How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost in Uganda?
The cost of gorilla trekking in Uganda varies based on several factors, including the time of year and the type of accommodation. Typically, a gorilla trekking permit costs $800, excluding transport to Bwindi or Mgahinga, meals, and porters. The income generated from gorilla permits contributes to conservation efforts, supports local communities, and helps secure wildlife corridors connecting protected areas like Bwindi and Mgahinga. The $800 permit fee is distributed as follows: 75% for conservation, 15% to the government, and 10% to local communities.
How to Get to Bwindi Forest National Park for Gorilla Trekking
By Air
Bwindi can be accessed via scheduled or chartered flights. Kihihi is the nearest airport for the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors, while Kisoro serves the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. Both airports are approximately 40 km (25 miles) from the park, with a drive of about 1.5 hours.
By Road
Driving from Entebbe Airport or Kampala to the park takes about 9-10 hours. If you’re already in Queen Elizabeth National Park, you can reach Bwindi by driving south for 2-3 hours, passing through Ishasha to see the famous tree-climbing lions before arriving at the Buhoma or Ruhija sector. From Lake Mburo National Park, the drive takes around 5-6 hours.
From Rwanda
The distance from Kigali, Rwanda, to Bwindi Forest National Park is about 4-5 hours, making it accessible for visitors coming from Rwanda.
